Wastewater plant design
Size a membrane bioreactor or a conventional activated sludge plant at the scoping stage: volumes, oxygen, membranes or clarifiers, equipment, energy, chemicals and sludge.
At engineer.beedy.ca/wwtp/. No account needed; the tool is free during its beta.
What it does
Beedy Engineer's wastewater designer sizes two technologies today: membrane bioreactor (MBR) and conventional activated sludge (CAS). Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and moving bed (MBBR) are marked for a later phase. The calculations run on our server; your browser receives the results.
First steps
- Choose MBR or CAS.
- Pick an influent preset: municipal sanitary, dairy or cheese, brewery, food processing, pulp and paper, or refinery and petrochemical. Then adjust it to your data.
- Enter flows (average flow in m³/d and a peaking factor), influent quality (BOD₅, COD, TSS, NH₄-N, TKN, TP, winter temperature) and effluent limits.
- Adjust design factors if you need to: sludge age (SRT), MLSS, F/M, membrane flux and fouling derate, oxygen factors, site elevation, and the number of trains (1 to 8).
- Click Recompute.
What you get
Bioreactor volume and retention time; oxygen demand and blower air and power; for MBR, membrane area at average flow and at peak with one train out; for CAS, clarifier area, solids loading, diameter and depth; return and waste sludge and sludge production; pumps, UV, installed power, energy use and annual energy cost; chemical dosing and storage; sludge handling; emergency surge containment; a controls schedule and the treatment-train sequence.
Optional modules add oil and grease, heavy metals, colour and refractory COD, cyanide, sulfide, phenols, fluoride, PFAS and advanced oxidation.
Saving and reports
- Save downloads your design as a JSON file; Load opens it again. Designs are not stored on our server.
- PDF report opens a printable summary; save it as PDF from your browser's print dialog.
The Plant and Methods tabs
Plant runs your design as a live biological simulation (ASM1 kinetics), with scenarios (design, cold winter, shock load) and operator controls per train. Methods shows every equation with its reference (Metcalf & Eddy, WEF manuals, Judd's MBR Book, ATV-DVWK A 131, EPA manuals).
