Settling pond design

Size a sediment pond from catchment, solids and storm data, check dam-safety consequence, route the storm, and produce a vendor RFQ package.

At engineer.beedy.ca/pond/. No account needed; free during beta.

What it does

It sizes settling ponds for mine, quarry and construction runoff. Choose a design standard: BC G7, USEPA (40 CFR 434), Alaska placer, or custom. The calculations run on our server; your browser receives the results.

First steps

  1. Pick the design standard.
  2. Fill the sidebar: catchment and disturbed area, runoff coefficient, precipitation, flow length and slope, curve number and time-of-concentration method; any continuous process flow; solids (inlet and target TSS, particle size d50, density); storm depth and duration and a climate scenario; dam-safety consequence inputs; outlet and spillway choices; cleanout period.
  3. Click Compute design.

What you get

Geometry and volume budget; particle settling (Stokes) and removal; riser, barrel and spillway sizing; cleanout interval and sediment load; storm routing (peak in and out, attenuation, stage, remaining freeboard); dam-safety consequence class (CDA), inflow design flood and required freeboard; a climate multiplier.

The tabs: Pond (plan view and a cross-section storm replay), Hydrology (the design hydrograph), 3D (orbit, pan, zoom, storm and rain animation), RFQ (a vendor request-for-quotation package in seven sections, saved with Print / Save PDF) and Methods.
